Assembly of Slip Clutches for Power Drills

Application example # 4

Abstract:

  • Two JetControl 243 Control Systems with Expansion Modules
  • Setting the slip torques of the clutches by means of digital drive control systems DIMA
  • Web-based visualization by means of JetViewSoft
  • Extensive help functions for operation
  • Detailed online check-list for retooling the machine
  • Uncomplicated error management specifying the cause of the error and suggesting steps for troubleshooting
  • Flexible due to programming of company-specific expansions in JavaScript
  • Industrial PC IPC 501 with Touch Screen for operating and visualizing
  • Networking with Ethernet TCP/IP and integration into the company network by means of industrial switch
  • For safety reasons, access is only possible from two defined PCs

The Product to be Manufactured:

This manufacturing company has got a large scope of manufacture. The components for rock-drill slip clutches are in-house products as well. The individual components must be preassembled by hand; then, they must be set to the respective torque. This way, the response of the slip clutch will be defined. As on this assembly line more than 30 different kinds of slip clutches are to be produced, the technology applied must be respectively flexible.

Criteria in Favor of Jetter AG:

Jetter AG offers complete application packages of automation control. One required function at Metabo has been torque control by means of a servo controller. This way, an additional expensive sensor would not be needed any more. Further important features are visualization and operation – the company network included. The Web-based JetViewSoft is the optimum visualization tool for the company; the Ethernet interface of the controller is of paramount importance.

Technical Description of the Production Plant:

The automated system consists of two JetControl 243 with expansion modules, three digital servo systems DIMA, one industrial PC IPC 501, and one hand-held operator panel. The servo controllers have directly been connected to the system bus of the two JetControl 243 and have thus been integrated into the control systems completely and transparently.

This also makes realtime access to the current and thus to the torque of the motion system possible, which is used for controlling the pressing process. The decisive factor was the fast reaction to reaching the slip torque, as each further distance-increment of the pressing axis is integrated into the tolerance of the slip torque and this way falsify the required slip torque. Thus, pressure control has been put into practice without using special sensors.

Due to transparent integration of two servo axes implementation is much easier and less expensive than the relatively high costs of a torque sensor.

The industrial PC IPC 501 is running by Windows 2000 and is equipped with a 15-inch display with touch screen for comfortable usage. Connection of the PC-periphery, as well as the communication with controllers, motion systems or further Industrial PCs is ensured by numerous interfaces. A hand-held operator panel is mounted on the opposite side of the pallet-route; it will only be applied in single block mode of operation.
